The Honda Civic offers two efficient engines. The first option is a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that can work with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). With the CVT providing quick shifting, it can get up to an EPA-estimated 30 MPG city and 38 MPG highway for LX CVT and Touring trims.
The second option is a more athletic 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It comes with a standard CVT and can provide you with up to an EPA-estimated 32 MPG city and 42 MPG highway for EX & EX-L trims .[i]
When it comes to the Honda Civic vs. Mazda3, the Mazda3 only offers one engine and it isn’t as efficient. Its SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L 4-cylinder engine can only get up to an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 35 MPG highway.[ii] You also won’t have the option of a manual transmission. A CVT is standard on all trim levels.
Safety & Driver Assistance Features
On top of being efficient, the Honda Civic was built to keep you and your passengers safe. It’s designed with an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure that can absorb the energy from an accident and direct it away from the interior.
During your drive, you can rely on lots of safety features to give you more awareness and prevent accidents. There’s a standard Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with guidelines that can help you back in or out of a parking spot. The Honda Sensing® system also comes standard and helps protect you with features like:
- • Collision Mitigation Braking System™
- • Forward Collision Warning
- • Lane Departure Warning
- • Road Departure Mitigation System
- • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow
The Mazda3 also offers lots of similar driver assistance features, but they don’t come standard on every trim level. It also wasn’t designed with an energy absorbing frame.
Passenger & Cargo Room
Both the Honda Civic and Mazda3 feature seating for up to five people. The Honda gives you more room to stretch out, though, with 97.8 cubic feet of passenger room. The Mazda3 is a tighter squeeze with only 92.8 cubic feet of space.
You’ll notice the difference when you’re behind the wheel. The Honda Civic has 39.3 inches of front headroom, while the Mazda3 only offers 38.0 inches. Your passengers will feel it, too. There’s 37.4 inches of rear legroom in the Honda, but only 35.1 inches of legroom in the Mazda.
The Honda Civic even makes it easier to pack everything you need with 15.1 cubic feet of cargo room in the trunk. The Mazda3 continues to be less convenient with only 13.2 cubic feet of space.
