What’s New in the 2020 Honda Civic?
For 2020, Honda has updated the Civic hatchback’s exterior styling. This follows exterior updates to both the sedan and coupe versions just one year prior. Other recent upgrades include the addition of the Honda Sensing® safety suite as standard in all models, as well as the introduction of a performance-focused Sport trim.
The Civic comes in three body styles: sedan, coupe, and hatchback. All variations can seat up to five people, and the cabins are appointed with attractive with high-end materials and well-cushioned seating. The cabin can be customized with available comfort features like heated seating, leather upholstery, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Adult passengers will enjoy sufficiently legroom, while children can ride in the back via two sets of LATCH car seat connections. Each model also promises plenty of storage for all your cargo. The Civic coupe’s trunk offers 12 cubic feet of storage, and the sedan’s trunk can hold 15.1 cubic feet. The hatchback can carry around 25.7 cubic feet behind its back row, and that space increases to 46.2 cubic feet when the back seats are folded.
All 2020 Civics come with Bluetooth®* and a USB port, and available tech features include navigation, HD Radio, wireless device charging, and more. The Civic scored remarkably well in its crash tests, and it comes standard with safety systems like lane departure warning, collision mitigation braking, and forward collision warning.
The Civic handles enjoyably well with responsive steering and soft suspension. It offers a decidedly engaging drive, and drivers looking for thrills behind the wheel can consider the performance-minded versions like the Sport or Si.
The standard engine in the Civic coupe and sedan is a 158-horsepower 4-cylinder. A 174-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder is also available for these body styles, and it comes standard in the hatchback. Gear-shifting can be handled through either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission. Any option provides quick acceleration from a stop or out of an onramp, and they maintain Honda’s signature fuel efficiency in the process.
History of the Honda Civic
By the time the Civic debuted in the U.S. in the early 1970s, American drivers were already familiar with Honda thanks to their line of high-quality motorcycles. The Civic’s 1973 debut not only signaled the maker’s triumphant entry into the North American automotive industry, it won over a host of new fans with its incredible fuel efficiency. As it arrived in the middle of an oil crisis, the Civic was met with an ecstatic reception and soon became a widespread site on roadways across America.
The Civic introduced a level of quality that would go on to set the class standards, and Honda has endeavored to improve on their compact car with each new year model. Through the 1980s, the Civic’s silhouette was streamlined, gradually evolving from its “breadbox” frame to a more contemporary, curvy design. The compact entered its tenth generation in 2016, and the modern Civic comes with remarkably sporty handling for its class, as well as an abundance of smart technology to reinforce Honda’s commitment to safety.
